How to Improve Insulin Sensitivity
As far back in 1970 the effectiveness and safety of the oral sulfonylureas (oral anti-diabetic drug) has been questioned based on a study by the University Group Diabebetes Program (UGDP). But why are they still being sold? - Money. There is a whole industry out there which needs loyal and obedient clients like you to keep to keep them business.
Many solid scientific studies have shown a mechanistic causal effect of elevated insulin on heart and vascular (blood vessels) disease; whereas almost all studies with cholesterolmisleadingly only show an association. Association does not imply cause and every scientist knows this.
Similarly, sugar does not cause diabetes; sugar is just listening to orders. Improper insulin signalling (miscommunication) is the cause of diabetes and other age-related diseases like heart disease and impotence. Therefore using drugs to bring blood sugar down will do nothing to improve the underlying problems, the real roots of chronic disease, which will always have to do with improper communication. The ‘general’ of metabolism communication is insulin. And it is really what must be treated to reverse heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and to some extent aging itself.
Insulin resistanceis a part of any known cause of heart and blood vessels disease. I don’t want you to forget this fact. Diabetes, heart and blood vessel diseases in their present epidemic form are preventable and curable. These disease conditions have the same root cause: insulin resistance. The fact that they affect different parts of the body does not mean they are separate diseases to be treated by different specialists.insulin sensitivity is the way to go to cure one’s self of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. How many times do you hear ‘experts’ on radio and TV telling you that these ‘civilized’ diseases are not curable? The laws of our land even forbid anyone to claim that these diseases of nutrition and life style are in fact curable. This is the way our ‘sickcare’ system works: interested symptom management and not in health promotion and disease prevention.
Just visit any shop (they have sprung up all over the place) and you will marvel at the number of different drugs in the ‘system’ that are meant to manage your high cholesterol, high blood sugar and your high blood pressure. Thanks to south-south cooperation we get these generic drugs cheap. What I keep saying is that insulin miscommunication and not just sugar is the problem. So while you take your G drug and go to sleep and believe that all is well because your blood sugar is down, the high concentration of insulin (due to insulin resistance) may lead to degenerative disease that may follow you down the years.
Let us begin this journey by knowing who our ‘enemies’ are. Our best ‘war plan’ is to learn to recognise and avoid these dangerous rebels. Now you have follow me to this far and you may wondering what next. Well the next step is to gather what we have learned so far and put them into action. This is but the first major step you are taking towards the solution of your problem and not just management.
World statistics on death from heart, blood vessels disease and diabetes show clearly that these are “civilized” disease, victimizing people on “civilized” diets with “backward” countries rapidly catching up in diabetic death rates as they switch to western foods. Diabetes since 19 th century has been known to be a disease of nutrition and it will take nutrition to correct it. In diabetics, blood fat levels tend to be high with consequent vascular (blood vessel) damage. And from this stem damage to the small vessels of kidney and retina (often causing blindness), poor blood circulation, gangrene and death from heart diseases. Oral anti-diabetic drugs, which seemed so wonderful at first because they indeed bring down blood sugar levels, were nevertheless completely useless in reducing death rate from vascular degeneration, and in fact seemed to promote this fatal development.
Type II diabetes is characterized by sufficient, often excessive, blood insulin levels. The problem was that the insulin was ineffective; it did not reduce blood sugar because the cells of the body have become resistant. So you see, merely bringing down the sugar level without addressing the underlying problem will do you no good. In the same way just bringing blood pressure down by taking drugs without addressing the underlying cause does not help you in the long run. Those drugs only work by beating a tired and weakened heart to work extra hard. Heart failure, elevated cholesterol, obesity, atherosclerosis, impotence and elevated blood sugar were all once well understood often to be but symptoms of diabetes or insulin resistance. But current medical practice ignores this basic truth. Do you know why? Medicine is no longer science, it is a business
FOODS TO AVOID
To improve insulin sensitivity Avoid sugar. Sugar, whether white or brown is not your best friend. Complete food comes with other nutrients (enzymes and vitamins) to aid in its digestion and metabolism. If you leave an unripe banana on a table, within few days it will ripe because it contains enzymes and other nutrients. But before it leaves the factory and finds it way into your home, white sugar is stripped of all nutrient and enzymes. What is left on the store shelves looking crystalline white is a chemical not food.
So when you eat sugar it puts a lot of pressure on the body’s digestive and metabolic enzymes and depletes the bones and tissues of essential mineral like magnesium, chromium, calcium etc to aid in its digestion. Even when sugar is finally absorbed into the blood it stresses the pancreas to secrete a lot of insulin get rid of it and when the cells are exposed to high concentration of insulin they become resistant to the action of insulin and this what you want to avoid.Continued depletion of the minerals (especially chromium and magnesium) and vitamins (particularly the B vitamins) leads to a total breakdown of an efficient system that has worked tirelessly to keep you healthy. The price we pay is high: high cholesterol, diabetes, soft bones, impotence etc. In Ghana we sometimes call these drinks as ‘minerals’. And that is what it is. It leaches minerals like magnesium, calcium etc from your body. It is also called “soft” drink and that is exactly what they do to your teeth and bones. They do not quench thirst and do not refresh you as is portrayed in adverts but rather by stealing minerals from your body through your urine they leave you worst off. That is why they are called minerals.
A 1994 Harvard study of bone fractures in teenage athletes found a strong association between cola beverage consumption and bone fractures in 14-year-old girls. The girls who drank cola were about five times more likely to suffer bone fractures than girls who didn't consume soda pop.
Now some smart business men refer to these drinks as energy drinks. In the bottle these ‘energy’ drinks look sparkling but I can assure you that they do not put any spark into your life. Their high fructose content will surely lead you down towards premature aging due to insulin abuse.Secondly distil water is used in the preparation of these soft drinks. Distil water means all the essential minerals have been removed from the water through evaporation. When this demineralised and of course lifeless water in addition to the high sugar gets into your blood what does it do to your body? First it stresses the pancreas to release a lot of insulin and secondly it leaches mineral from the body. Many years later you become hyperinsulinemia----having high concentration of insulin floating all the time in your blood. And this is the beginning of your woes: diabetes, osteoporosis, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, cancer and impotence begin to call at your door step. To improve insulin sensitivity Avoid alcohol.
Alcohol as I have already pointed out to you in the earlier chapter is a fermented sugar. It is ‘hard’ drink. But unlike sugar (soft drink) alcohol does not undergo digestion; it easily moves into the blood stream. When the alcohol travels to the liver it flashes the mineral zinc out into the urine. Your system adopts desperate measures to digest this unwelcome visitor who ‘refused’ to undergo digestion in the stomach. In the struggle to get rid of this intruder, you body wastes essential minerals, vitamins (particularly the B vitamins) and enzymes. But these nutrients which are needed to keep your heart, prostate gland and blood vessels healthy are diverted to fight a totally unnecessary ‘war’ .
Secondly drinking alcohol can increase fat secretion by the liver and have just as detrimental an effect as ingesting saturated fat itself. Drink too much alcohol and you stimulate your liver to churn out the very fats (VLDL) that promote heart disease. So dear reader don’t be carried away by the numerous adverts and promotions you see on TV.When you drink alcohol your body loses but your urine is enriched. I can therefore tell you that urine is a better drink (excuse my language). It is not a joke. Alcoholics looks old and worn out because the chemicals they happily push down their throats stresses their pancreas and wear out their adrenals. If you really want improve insulin sensitivity then cut down (if possible eliminate) alcohol consumption.
To improve insulin sensitivity Avoid white flour
Any one who tells you that white sugar and white flour are healthy food is misinforming you. White flour is a devitalized demineralised foodless food. What does this devitalized food do to your pancreas? Remember I asked you in chapter one: why do we eat? Just for fun? Just to fill your stomach? Almost all the nutrients have been removed the flour by man for just one purpose- so that flour can stay longer on the shelf without going bad and that is a profitable business to the producers. It’s all about money. And as if that is not enough, most flour is then bleached .So the nice white powder you see is a junk.
In what way does white flour affects insulin sensitivity? Now what is a slice of bread? It’s a slice of sugar. Being a devitalised and demineralised food it stresses the pancreas and provokes insulin spikes.
To improve insulin sensitivity Don’t Drink your Milk
“But milk is important source of calcium” you may protest. Yes milk contains calcium. The first point is this: cow’s milk is meant for the young calf not for you and not even for your baby. Secondly it contains very little of magnesium. And without adequate magnesium your body can not use the calcium to build the strong teeth and bones you need.
The path that transforms healthy milk products into allergen ( for example asthma) and carcinogens begins with modern feeding methods .Commercially bred cows are not fed on green grass but rather on high-protein, soy-based feeds. This method of breeding produce cows with abnormally large pituitary glands so that they produce three times more milk than cows fed on green grass. What you are not told is that the quality of milk produced by grass-feed cow is different from those raised by commercial farmers. When you drink milk from commercially raised cows you also take in all the anti-biotics and hormones given to these sick cows.
Their milk is then pasteurise (heated) so that all valuable enzymes are destroyed. Now for calcium to be absorbed it requires the enzyme phosphatase. Do you know the fate of this enzyme during pasteurisation? -- Destroyed. Literally dozens of other precious enzymes are destroyed in the pasteurisation process. What is left in the milk tin on the shelf that looks so beautiful is not an ideal whole food because without these enzymes milk is very difficult to digest. Your precious pancreas (already over-stressed by soft drinks, alcohols, white flour) is not always able to produce these enzymes; over-stress of the pancreas can lead to diabetes and other diseases.
Development of diabetes and other heart diseases is only a matter of time. Over consumption of milk and other milk products will surely wear down your pancreas.
Still worried about how to obtain calcium? It is possible to obtain all your calcium from seeds (sesame seed and dark green vegetable. Where do you think the cows get theirs from?
All of the above are really not food. They have been stripped of their health giving elements by man. Your system provides all the missing ingredients which man has taken out. The net result is that in a matter of time your system gives up and you end up with a sick body.
